If you are interested in learning more about becoming a Foster Family please contact our Foster Care Department. Our Foster Care Recruiter is available to answer your questions and provide the necessary information to help you make the initial steps in determining whether fostering is right for you and your family.

Following your initial telephone inquiry, the recruiter accompanied by an experienced foster parent, will arrange a time to visit you in your home to review the Application Package and answer any additional questions that you may have.

There are children and  teens in our community who need you.

What is Foster Care?
There are many children and teens in our community who need a home on a temporary basis while problems are being resolved in their families. As a Foster Parent, you can provide a safe, nurturing home and make a difference in that child's life.

Is There a Need for More Foster Parents in Brant County?
Yes. By the end of January 2003, there were 343 children in the care of The Children's Aid Society of Brant. The number of approved foster homes has not kept pace with the number of children coming into care.

Do I Have a Say About the Child I Would Like to Foster?
Yes. A decision to place a child is based on the needs of a child. The Children's Aid Society of Brant will work with you to find a child that would fit best into your family situation.

Who Can Foster?
People from all walks of life. Couples, single people, homemakers, and people who work outside the home can foster children or teens.

The most important requirement is that you care about children and are able to provide a safe and nurturing home.

Why Do Children or Teens Need Foster Care?
Children come into the care of The Children's Aid Society as a result of abuse, neglect, parental illness or abandonment. Foster children range from infancy to age 16, and some remain in care up to 18 years old.

Is There Support for Foster Parents?
Yes. There is financial reimbursement that covers the cost of daily care for the child. There are training and educational opportunities for foster parents. Also, there is support from service workers. Foster parents network and provide each other with support as well.

The Alternate Care Program

The Alternate Care Program is a specialized foster care program which provides care for children with developmental difficulties.

The program was established in 1981 as a way to prevent children from being institutionalized. The program offers respite and/or shared care for families with special needs children.

The parents of the special needs child retain guardianship and continue to make all the major decisions regarding their child. The parents and foster parents work closely together to provide the best possible care for the child with special needs. The amount of care provided is based on the individual needs of each family.
